Where Prince created his own nightclub

In 1989, Prince opened his own night club at this location, naming it Glam Slam after the song of the same name from the album Lovesexy (1988). Besides hosting a wide range of musical acts, Prince himself performed there at least 19 times. Owning his own venue gave him the power to highlight and promote musicians he appreciated and admired—and cut middlemen out of the live-music business. Prince also opened a store to sell New Power Generation merchandise (1408 West Lake Street) during the same period. He sold the club in 1997. Damaged in a 2006 fire and extensively remodeled, the building served as a nightclub until 2013.
